National Harbor, MD – May 15, 2023 – Nitel, a leading network as a service (NaaS) provider, announced today that it has activated a new point of presence (POP) in Miami. Together with Nitel’s seven existing POPs, the new location will strengthen Nitel’s network coverage in the U.S. while enabling greater access to Latin America. In keeping with Nitel’s strategy of establishing a presence at the premier Internet collocation facility in each market, the new POP is located in Miami’s NAP of the Americas, which serves as a primary gateway to Latin America.
“The NAP of the Americas is an important site for international providers like us to gain access to our U.S.-based customers,” said Javier Cento, head of Carrier Relations at Ufinet, one of the leading international telecom operators in Latin America. “Nitel’s presence there brings our networks closer together and strengthens our ability to create complete global network solutions for our customers.”
With the Miami POP in place, Nitel’s wholesale and enterprise customers will benefit from improved network performance via lower latency connections at service locations in the Southeastern region of the United States. Currently, over 6% of Nitel customer sites are in the state of Florida – the fourth largest economy in the country – making it a logical location for network expansion. The additional coverage means any location within the continental United States will be no more than 500 miles from a Nitel point of presence.
According to Lawrence Edmond, Nitel’s SVP of Network Engineering, the POP is equipped to initially support a capacity of 32 terabytes through its Cisco ASR 9000 series routing platform. In addition, Nitel has upgraded the internet transits on its network and connected to two additional peering exchanges in the Miami facility.
With access to over 260 carrier and content provider networks, the NAP of the Americas location will enable customer access to domestic and international destinations, SaaS and other cloud providers, as well as increasingly in-demand content platforms.
Nitel’s presence at the NAP of the Americas is the company’s next step in expanding its international presence, a strategy first announced in late 2021 when international private equity firm Cinven made a significant investment in the company.
Edmond continued, “The new POP in Miami gives us a complete domestic fabric while also serving as a springboard for our international plans. Today, U.S.-based customers can come to Nitel for ubiquitous, high-performance network services here in the States while also enabling access to their international locations through strategically deployed points of presence.”
The Miami POP is Nitel’s eighth domestic POP, with the others in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles, New York and Seattle.
