MPLS a Perfect Fit for Regional Bank

Benefits Include: Flexibility, Cost-Efficiency, Scalability

Like many regional banks, a Nitel client based in northwest Minnesota had 14 locations scattered throughout small towns. The bank was seeking a more affordable network solution that met its unique billing requirements, but offered flexibility to accommodate future plans for the company.

Challenging Locations
Many of the bank's facilities were located 50 to 100 miles from the nearest carrier point of presence (POP). Its existing network was made up of multiple point-to-point connections, which served the company well operationally, but was costly due to high mileage charges on the local loops.

Nitel proposed a switch from private line to MPLS to cut cost. MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) offers meshed architecture to allow anywhere-to-anywhere connectivity among all locations within a multi-site network.

Faster Speeds at a Fraction of the Cost
The newer technology gave the bank the bandwidth it needed at a fraction of the cost of private line. Put simply, rather than purchasing a point-to-point connection to and from every location on the network, the client only needed one connection at each site, which connected to the MPLS "cloud."

Nitel also customized billing options for the client, dividing the invoice among multiple corporate entities that share financial responsibility across the network. Nitel also gave the customer flexible contract terms to accommodate potential future changes at various sites.

We Can Help You Win!
If this bank's situation sounds similar to yours or your customer's, MPLS could be the right solution.

"MPLS is one of the hottest connectivity technologies on the market today. For multi-site customers, it is flexible, cost-effective and scalable," said Tim Basa, Nitel Vice President of Sales and Marketing. "Nitel offers flat-rate MPLS in all lower 48 states and can customize a solution to fit the customer's unique needs."

MPLS is cost-effective because it uses an IP-based network. It is easy to add sites to the network without intensive network redesigns, making the service flexible and scalable.

VERTICALLY CHALLENGED?
CALL NITEL

Nitel has implemented MPLS solutions to fulfill customer requirements across a spectrum of industries. A few examples:

Banks and credit unions reduce cost by replacing legacy technologies like frame relay or ATM. MPLS gives them a meshed architecture to facilitate any-to-any data transfer for common applications like check imaging and off-site data warehousing.

Health care facilities maintain HIPAA compliance for secure data transfer and storage of medical records with an MPLS network solution. With widespread use of high-resolution digital imaging and telemedicine, health care facilities need a secure, reliable high-capacity network that is also cost-effective.

Retailers benefit from the low cost of MPLS to interconnect multiple retail locations to each other, to data centers or to host locations. MPLS scales quickly for new locations and is perfect for "chatty" retail applications like credit card transactions and inventory systems.
